Dear UHOA Members,

UHOA has been nominated under the "Most User Friendly Tourism Association" category at the Ekkula Tourism awards to be held 12 February 2015.

We have very proud that our association has been recognized as an institution that is offering exemplary service to the public and we would like to bring this award home. Kindly log on to the website and vote UHOA under this category.

Here's the link:

On behalf of the Chair-lady, we wish our Association success at the Awards.
The Uganda Tourism Board is in the final process of the recruitment of international Public Relations firms that will be marketing Uganda to the rest of the world.

The PR firms which will be marketing Uganda are:
These firms will officially be unveiled at a ceremony to be presided over by the President next week.

This morning, we met with the CEOs of these PR firms at a meeting held at UTB and as UHOA we have quiet alot to do if we are to benefit from the publicity of these firms.

What UHOA Members need to do:
  • Service: These PR firms will be targeting the high end clientele because regular travelers usually want to go where the rich vacation. In that case as UHOA we need to greatly improve on the service in our hotels. Much as the high end clientele have the potential to market the destination, they also have the same potential to destroy the destination if it does not meet their standard. We shall be organizing alot of training programs and we request our hotel managers who can assist us in the training to register with UHOA.
  • Quality Marketing materials, photos, websites, magazines: Hotels now need to invest in professional photographs and websites of your establishment. As you well know, the markets we are now targeting are very well informed and they do research before they visit  any destination. Please make sure details of your hotel are update both on your website and the UHOA website.
  • Presence on Social media: Social media is one of the cheapest and most effective marketing tools today. Its also one of the quickest ways you can interact with your clients. Please make sure that you have very active social media accounts and a dedicated staff to respond to all queries and make regular updates.
  • Pricing of your hotel rooms: As you are aware, some of the common complaints we get is that hotels in Uganda are too expensive and this makes Uganda as a destination expensive as well. We kindly request all our members to review the pricing of your rooms to take into account the high seasons and the low seasons so that we market them all year round.
  • Special Events at your hotels: We also request all our members to inform us of any special events at your hotels in advance so that we can be able to write an article which we can submit to the PR firms for publishing in their press. Easter is around the corner and we are working on a campaign for the hotels which we shall share with you shortly.
  • Participation at Tourism Fairs: We expect the PR firms to increase interest of Uganda in the international press and one of the avenues they are going to use the the tourism fairs around the world. As you know, UHOA has never participate at any of these fairs due to lack of capacity and financing. With your support, we would like UHOA to participate at these fairs this and make use of the publicity from the PR firms to market our hotels abroad. We shall keep you updated.

As always, please let us know where you need assistance from the secretariat.

NEW UHOA SUBSCRIPTION FEES:

Dear UHOA Members,

For the last 12 years, UHOA has not revised its membership subscription considering the infancy of our sector.  However, this has greatly affected the operations of our secretariat in the last few years since our subscription alone has not been sufficient to run our office. UHOA is now one of the key sectors in Uganda's tourism industry and a very vibrant association that participates in many activities. This requires a steady flow of income to remain sustainable.

We have been blessed to get assistance from development partners to carry out some studies on the hotel sector. However, we now need our members to join us in ensuring that UHOA not only has enough income to participate in all tourism activities and organize more robust capacity building programs for our staff but also empower our secretariat by recruiting more staff and regional offices to bring our services closer to our members.

To achieve this, we have had to review our membership fees for the first time in 12 years. Also, after consultations with our partners and parent ministry, we have agreed to open our membership to ALL facilities offering accommodation in Uganda (lodges, campsites, bed and breakfasts, homestays etc). We would like UHOA to be achieve our vision to be "the best provider of hospitable services in the hospitality industry" and also a one stop centre for all accommodation related information.

In the new structure, it has also been agreed that as we wait for UTB to grade all the hotels in Uganda, we shall categorize ALL our hotels into Big, Medium and Small hotels. The Ministry of Tourism is looking to tap into the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Events) market and the grading of the hotels will be very important as we are planning conferences to take place in Uganda.

The new structure and subscription fees will be as follows:

New Structure

New Subscription Fees

Small Hotels: 0 – 35 Rooms

500,000

Medium size hotels: 36 - 70 rooms

1,000,000

Large/ Big size Hotels:  Above 70 rooms

1,500,000

Kindly note that the new fees structure will be inclusive of UHOA Annual Certificate.

Please also note that the new fees structure takes effect from 1 January 2015

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all our members for your Patronage and support of our Association. Because of you, UHOA is now one of the biggest private sector associations in the Tourism industry. Our ED will share the plan of the activities we hold to host this year and we very much look forward to your participation.

Regards,
Twaha Lukwanzi
UHOA Treasurer.
To all UHOA Members,

As we come to the end of a very successful year, i would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Am very proud to note that we are closing the year as the strongest private sector association in Uganda's Tourism Industry today. None of this would have been achieved without the incredible support of our members this year. Thank you for regularly attending all meetings we have organised in 2015, for participating in all our activities and most of all for endeavoring to pay all your subscription fees on time so that the secretariat would be able to run smoothly.

I would also like to thank my Executive Committee members under whose guidance, UHOA has achieved alot during the course of the year. Very special thanks to our Founding Father Hajji B.M Kibirige who has been the corner stone of our association for the last 15 years that we have been in existence. Am very glad to note that his vision for our Association is finally becoming a reality and today UHOA is truly the "Best provider of Services in the Hospitality Industry". I would also like to thank our General Secretary, Mr. Birungyi Cephas who has always stepped in to support the secretariat whenever we need him. Our members have also benefited from his legal guidance free of charge. UHOA is truly blessed to have Mr. Birungyi as our GS. Most of all a very big thank you to my entire Executive Council under whose leadership we have been able to shine as an Association in 2015.

Very special thanks also go to Mr. Ian Duncan and Mr Anthony Chege, the leaders of our General Managers Association. Thank you for reviving the GM Board. This was also a dream of Hajji Kibirige and am so proud to see that it has been reactivated. I pledge my support and the support of my Executive in ensuring the sustainability of the GM Board in the coming years.

I would like to thank all our partners who have supported our Association in 2015. Our Association is only as strong as our networks. We thank our partners who have sponsored our activities in 2015 (UTB, UWA, Ministry of Tourism, AUTO, UTA and UWEC). We pledge to continue working very closely with you in 2016 to boost the growth of the tourism industry in Uganda.

Last but not least, very special thanks to the team at our Secretariat. This is a small team but they are very passionate about UHOA and they have diligently served our members in 2015. We thank the ED, Jean, ES, Sylvia and our Admin Assistant Sam for all their hard work. I pledge my support and the support of my Executive in the execution of their duties in 2016.

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy new Year 2016. May the joys and blessings of Christmas be with you all during this festive season. Our love and greetings to all the management and staff of your hotels and wonderful families who have supported you in 2015.

Our Secretariat will be closed from Wednesday 23 December 2015 to 5 January 2016 to allow our staff take their annual leave and enjoy the Holiday.

Susan Muhwezi
CHAIRLADY.

Dear UHOA Members,

We have been in receipt of communication from our Members about a letter from Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development in regards to an assessment of Occupational Safety and Health fees. We requested for some time to first consult with our General Secretary on the way forward.

Our GS has advised that all our UHOA members should register at the Ministry of Gender Labour and Social Development (MGLSD) as soon as possible as we go ahead to engage the Ministry to see how we can work together. As this is the law, we must first show compliance before we can sit down to discuss the modalities of implementation.

For members who have not yet been assessed, our office will pick up the registration papers from MGLSD and we shall request you to come and fill them in at our office so that next week we submit them to the Ministry. You might need to be there in person but someone from the secretariat will be there to assist you.

We would like to show good will to the MGLSD officials when we organize a meeting with them and to also have facts on challenges and weaknesses because that is the only way that we shall be able to reach a common ground. This is a new law and we must comply even as we engage government and other stakeholders on its implementation.

Kindly register with Sylvia by Wednesday 9 December next week so that we plan to go to the Ministry by Friday 11 December 2015.
